HC Vardar – Skopje 28:28 HSV Hamburg (14:16)
In the first lag in the Final 16 stage, Vardar survived the Champion, HSV Hamburg. A tie is the most objective outcome from this match, where both teams had great chances to win. Hamburg was in a lead with 5 goals, and had a fast break for six, but the attempt from Jensen was saved by Vardar’s goalkeeper, Angelov. Vardar had many chances in the second half to take the lead with clear shots which were stopped by Bitter. In the end both teams were satisfied with a draw, because in eight days they will start from zero.
The only black spot in this duel was the faul for red card by Pascal Hens, who slapped Timur Dibirov while he was running in counter attack. Dibirov ended in hospital with eye hematoma and will be out of the court for at least three weeks.
It is not custom to comment the refereeing, but the Hungarian couple did not deserve the Final 16 stage of the Champions League. They did not harm Vardar nor Hamburg, but with their decisions they harmed the game, they destroyed every aspect of modern handball. EHF fought to make changes and to make more attractive game out of handball, but thanks to Dobrovits and Tajok we went back in different times, in the late 80’s.
