Before a sold-out crowd in the Savings Bank Arena, Hamburg from the beginning had difficulties in their game. The weak selection on the offensive was complicated by Kiel’s 6-0 cover. After HSV managed to keep the game open for 15 minutes , THW took on the pace and took the lead comfortably. In the second half, HSV had to overcome Johan Sjöstrand and the great defense of Kiel thus did not approach home team’s lead again. Best scorer for Hamburg was Joan Cañellas with six goals. In Kiel, Marko Vujin reached ten successful goals .
The second half started, as the first had ended for HSV. Two goals from Christian Sprenger made for a nine- goal deficit . The first two digits difference was discarded after a seven meter by Hans Lindberg ( 12:22 , 36′ ) . Hamburg tried to revive their attack with new variants, they succeeded for a short while, after a goal by Andreas Nilsson and a Joan Cañellas at 16:25 (45′) . Kiel held the HSV at a distance and had great goalkeeper in Sjöstrand, who was difficult to overcome. Hamburg could not stop in the final minutes the momentum THW gained again . With the bitter 24:35 defeat on Boxing Day , HSV conceded their fourth defeat of the season and THW remained on the top of the Table in Bundesliga after 20 rounds.
Martin Schwalb (HSV Handball coach):
“I hope the fan is feeling better, which is the most important. Congratulations to the THW. Today, the much better team won. They were never at a loss for solutions. After 15 minutes we were still halfway in the game, but have then lost the thread. It was for us today a thoroughly used day. “
Alfred Gislason (coach THW Kiel):
“It was one of the best season performance from a super defense. I am delighted with this victory. Before the game I came out and firmly believe that it will be very close. “
